Begin Downtown! FAQs

Tell me a little bit more about the Begin Downtown tour? How did this come about? And why?

In previous years Dania Beach has held numerous events in the downtown area West of Federal Highway, where the antiques district, city government, library and many downtown restaurants and businesses reside. The Arts & Seafood Celebration was started three years ago in Frost Park, considerably East of downtown and each year there has been discussion of how to involve the downtown area and its businesses more in the ASC. Involvement of the downtown began with the idea of free parking for up to 400 vehicles in the city’s main parking structure, connected to Frost Park via a shuttle bus. The Chamber of Commerce and Community Redevelopment Agency partnered to provide welcoming activities for guests who arrive to park in the garage and take the shuttle. There will be refreshments and activities in the city plaza adjacent to the garage and library. Additionally interested guests can pick up a “passport” and have it stamped free at participating downtown businesses to submit it for a major prize.

How can a Dania Beach business participate?
Downtown businesses may simply remain open Saturday March 21 to receive visitors to the city. Interested businesses may also take a space in the welcome area between the garage and library, displaying their products and services for arriving guests who are on their way to Frost Park and the Arts & Seafood Festival. Another option is to become one of the “passport” participants, remaining open and stamping the passports of visitors as they walk the downtown area before boarding the shuttle for Frost Park.

Why is it beneficial for the city?
Dania Beach is one of many Broward County cities along Federal Highway or U.S. 1. Some 50,000 cars pass through daily from South (Hallendale and Hollywood) to North (airport, Fort Lauderdale, points North). Most businesses rely on this traffic flow and as a result, many close weekends when the traffic is lesser. The Art & Seafood Celebration is an opportunity to increase business but also to attract visitors who during the week are in a hurry. The visitors will have time and opportunity to become familiar with Dania Beach and its business base and this, in turn, will benefit Dania Beach.

Will it be an ongoing initiative beyond the art and seafood festival? Several initiatives are directed at revitalizing the downtown area.

  • The Creative Arts Council has been planning a series of art related events in the downtown area. Recently City Hall has installed equipment to hang art works, converting the Atrium into an art gallery now hosting its third major exhibition.
  • A group of food truck vendors has proposed a one-night a month event in downtown Dania Beach and is in the permitting process. It would include showing a movie, music by DJ and other attractions.
  • The antiques shops and home design related businesses in Dania Beach have created a special district and are finalizing proposals to promote the downtown area.

What do you/the city hope that visitors get out of participating in the Begin Downtown event?
The Arts & Seafood Celebration has become an annual event with its unique character, laid back stage musical performances live, more than 80 artists exhibiting original artwork and some great food while professionals create a sand sculpture and kids play in a beautiful green park. Visitors have discovered the unknown aspects of Dania Beach when attending this festival.

The downtown area of Dania Beach has its own charm, some great restaurants and unique businesses. It is the city’s hope that in a less hurried pace, visitors will discover this interesting aspect of our city.

Finally, logistics. How can visitors participate in the tour?
The city’s 4-story parking garage is located in the center of the downtown area, a block west of US 1 and accessible from West Dania Beach Boulevard or Morris Udell Street and either Park Avenue or Southwest 3rd Avenue. Park free there from 8 am all day long and exit onto the city hall complex in front of the library, where exhibitors will be located and blank passports with maps will be available. From there guests can either go directly to the nearby shuttle bus stop to head for Frost Park and the ASC, or they can linger downtown browsing the exhibits or can set off on foot with passport in hand to visit local businesses within a four block area and get stamped for the raffle drawing.
